The SCMUA owns and operates Sussex County's Solid Waste and Recycling Facilities. The Solid Waste Complex is located in Lafayette Township near the intersection of Routes 15 and 94. The Solid Waste Facilities consist of a 3 Phase Sanitary Landfill, Residents' Convenience and Recycling Center (RC/RC), Vegetative Waste Composting Facility, and Woodwaste Mulching Facility. The Solid Waste Facilities were designed and constructed to provide for the proper and environmentally sound disposal of all of Sussex County 's residential and commercial generated waste. In 2007, the Solid Waste Facility accepted a total of 117,000 tons of waste. Current solid waste tonnage is approximately 350 tons/day. Since the landfill's opening in February 1990, over 1,700,000 tons of Sussex County Waste has been accepted for disposal. It is projected that the 54.5 acre landfilling operation has a projected life through 2016/2017 based on the current NJDEP permit. The SCMUA offers plain and double shredded colorized mulch products at a nominal fee. The SCMUA recycling operations consist of the recycling and marketing of Class A, B, C, and D Type materials, including but not limited to commingled containers, fiber, cardboard and mixed paper, wood, tires, batteries, motor oil and antifreeze. Additionally, the SCMUA annually sponsors two Household Hazardous Waste Disposal Events and four Computer/Electronic Waste Recycling Events which are free (within limits) for Sussex County residents and businesses. The SCMUA also provides secure document shredding through a contract vendor at reasonable charge.
