Position Summary:
The Sussex County Municipal Utilities Authority (SCMUA) is seeking qualified candidates for the position of Wastewater Facilities Operator I, II, or III. Under the direction of the Chief Plant Operator and/or the Maintenance Foreman, and in their absence, the Superintendent of Wastewater Facilities, the selected candidate will assist in the operation and maintenance of the Authority’s wastewater treatment plants and related infrastructure.
Key Responsibilities:
- Operate treatment and transmission facilities to control the flow and processing of wastewater and sludge.
- Monitor gauges, meters, instrumentation, and control systems.
- Observe variations in operating conditions.
- Maintain accurate operating logs and records.
- Collect samples and perform routine laboratory testing and analysis.
- Operate pumps, valves, gates, and related equipment.
- Make operational decisions in the absence of direct supervision.
- Respond to emergency situations and be available to report to Authority facilities on a 24-hour basis, as required.
- Perform other duties as assigned to support the safe and efficient operation of wastewater facilities.
Qualifications:
- High school diploma or equivalent.
- Valid driver’s license.
- Ability to read, write, and understand English sufficiently to perform job duties
- Knowledge of wastewater treatment and transmission processes, including chemical, bacteriological, and biological systems.
- Ability to analyze plant and equipment operational issues and implement effective solutions.
- Ability to perform maintenance-related duties as needed.
- Ability to respond promptly and effectively to emergency situations.
- Ability to communicate effectively and maintain positive working relationships.
- Operator I requires a minimum of 1-year experience in the water or wastewater field, Operator II requires a minimum of a S-1 operator license, and Operator III requires a minimum of a S-2 operator license.
Working Conditions:
- Must be able to lift and carry up to 50 pounds.
- May be required to work nights, weekends, holidays, and respond to emergencies on a rotating “on-call” basis.
